Composer. Storyteller. Genre is just a starting point.

My work

Film and Screen

Music doesn't illustrate a story — it is the story. From intimate dramatic scores to sweeping cinematic landscapes, James Bernard writes music that lives inside a scene, shapes a character, and stays with an audience long after the credits roll.

Concert and Stage

With over 100 compositions spanning orchestra, chamber ensemble, choral, and solo performance, James's concert work defies easy categorization — and that's the point. Classical architecture, jazz harmony, bluegrass grit, and rock energy all find their way in. The result is music that surprises, moves, and lingers.

Collaboration & Commission

James's best work has always been made with other people. Directors, ensembles, songwriters, theater makers, and musicians of every stripe — if you have a story to tell and sound to shape it with, he wants to hear from you. Commissions, co-writes, and creative partnerships are always welcome.

From Brotherly Love — performed at the Oyster Bay Music Festival

All kinds of music flow through me. I see music as universal.
